The record supports that most leading 1990s Russian oligarchs were Jewish, with six of the top seven usually cited as Jewish, but it contradicts the 'almost exclusively' framing. Potanin, one of the seven, is non-Jewish, and the Forbes-listed Russian billionaires include many non-Jewish businessmen, while Times of Israel says Jews were 'not the majority' of oligarchs.

Contradicts. The same top-seven group included Vladimir Potanin, who is described as non-Jewish ethnic Russian, so the group was not exclusively Jewish.[1][2]
Contradicts. A Forbes-listed roster of Russian billionaires shows many non-Jewish oligarchs of Azerbaijani, Uzbek, Ingush, Dagestani, Chechen and Tatar background, so 'almost exclusively' Jewish overstates the picture.[3]

Supports. Multiple sources report that six of the seven top 1990s oligarchs (Aven, Berezovsky, Fridman, Gusinsky, Khodorkovsky, Smolensky) were of Jewish ancestry, citing Slezkine's The Jewish Century.[5][6][7][8]
Context. Sources attribute the Jewish overrepresentation to Soviet-era exclusion from Party power and entrepreneurial skills, and note that the group was a small set of bankers and entrepreneurs rather than the entire oligarchy.[6][7][8]
