Sources support the claim that Jews were a dominant core of Russia's early-1990s oligarchs: Aish reports that by the early 1990s six of the seven richest oligarchs had Jewish family links, and a lower-credibility 2019 source says at least 80% had Jewish roots.

What was said

… They were the revolutionary core. Didn't matter if it was capitalist or socialist. You know, in poor Russia, they were the core of the Bolsheviks in 1917. They were the core of the oligarchs in 1992. You know, when you introduce dishonest, uh, fraudulent business tactics into society, well, Gentiles just can't sit there. They have to respond. What we found

Supports. Aish.com reports that by the early 1990s six of Russia's seven richest oligarchs had Jewish family links, which directly addresses the claim's central assertion for the period.[3]

Supports. A 2019 essay states that during Yeltsin's time in the early 1990s at least 80 percent of the oligarchs had some Jewish roots, though its low credibility rating limits its weight.[4]

Supports. YIVO's encyclopedia says Jews were prominent among those who took advantage of privatization and market opening after 1991, and that by 1998 Jews had created and dominated five of the seven largest new private commercial banks.[5]

Supports. AP reports that several dozen Jewish tycoons from Russia were believed to have taken Israeli citizenship or residency, and that many oligarchs with Jewish ties were prominent figures.[1]

Contradicts. The Leads Stories fact-check rejects the claim that Jewish control of major banks and financial institutions is a fact, calling it a classic antisemitic conspiracy theory. This debunks a control narrative, not the demographic prominence the claim asserts.[2]

Context. The Jewish Chronicle notes that most oligarchs were clerks, scientists and technicians rather than black-marketeers, which qualifies the picture of who the oligarchs were but does not contradict Jewish prominence among them.[6]
