The claim's 600,000 figure sits at the top edge of CSIS's January 2026 estimate of 500,000–600,000 Ukrainian military casualties, so it is not clearly reached. Other estimates are lower (Zelensky's roughly 450,000 total including about 50,000 killed, and a Western official's 250,000–300,000), and the post itself relays a speaker's study rather than an official count.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What was said

… Are you talking about military deaths? Military? I think last one I saw, that was like 500,000, but, uhm, another 100,000 in civilians, maybe. Oh, yeah, I had come up there was a study some months ago on obituaries appearing in Ukrainian newspapers. That was a guy who put it at 600,000 military casualties, not just deaths, casualties in general. Death, you know, all countries lie about their casualties. The U.S. Does it all the time. There is no Ukrainian official number. They would never release that. It would be ridiculous. Anyway, whatever your view is, it's going to be much higher than that. …

What we found

Contradicts. Zelensky's estimate of around 50,000 killed and 400,000 wounded, and a February 2026 Western official's estimate of 250,000–300,000 casualties, both fall well below 600,000.[2][3]

Supports. CSIS's January 2026 estimate, as reported by Al Jazeera and the Russia Matters report card, puts Ukrainian military casualties at 500,000–600,000, which includes the claimed 600,000 at the upper bound.[2][4]

Context. Neither Moscow nor Kyiv has released reliable official casualty figures, and Reuters could not independently verify the CSIS battlefield estimates, so the 600,000 figure rests on a disputed third-party estimate.[1][4]

Context. The claim is drawn from the post's account of a study, and the post's own assertions cannot corroborate it. The Ukrainian General Staff figures in the sources concern Russian losses, not Ukrainian ones.[5][6]
