The 30,000-per-month figure matches reported Russian casualties (killed, wounded, and missing) in 2026, but not deaths: CSIS puts Russian battlefield fatalities at roughly 400,000–450,000 over about 52 months, around 8,000–9,000 per month, so 'over 30,000 dying every month' holds only under the casualty measure. The figures also come largely from Ukrainian General Staff estimates that independent sources have not verified.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What we found

Contradicts. CSIS estimates 400,000–450,000 Russian battlefield fatalities between February 2022 and June 2026, which works out to roughly 8,000–9,000 deaths per month, far below 30,000 deaths per month.[1]

Contradicts. Newpol's estimate of about 460,000 battlefield deaths on both sides by end-2025 also implies monthly death counts well below 30,000, even though the same piece describes 30,000 per month as 'dying'.[2]

Supports. CSIS and the Stripes report on it say Russia's monthly casualty rate in 2026 was over 30,000, and the Kyiv Independent cites the Ukrainian General Staff at around 30,000 Russian casualties per month since the start of 2026.[1][3][4]

Context. The monthly casualty totals come from Ukrainian General Staff figures that Al Jazeera and IBTimes note cannot be independently verified, and casualties include wounded and missing, not only the dead.[5][6]
