The claim's 700,000 figure matches only the estimated Russian death toll (Zelensky and the Economist's lower-to-upper deaths range), not total casualties. Sources put total Russian casualties at roughly 1.4–2.1 million (Economist) or 1.6 million (Zelensky), and Ukrainian losses add roughly 450,000 more, so a total near 700,000 is grossly understated.

What was said

… Uhm, whether they they go to a purely ISIS, you know, style terrorist group that they'll invent again, uhm, whole cloth, that, you know, that's a separate issue. But, um, um, this loss of life now, I don't know, maybe 700,000 total casualties for absolutely nothing. I've also heard reports of tens of thousands of fighting men who could be buried in unmarked graves while their commanding officers continue to collect their paychecks. Have you heard anything about that? I don't remember where. …

What we found

Contradicts. The Economist's model, as reported by Kyiv Post and United24, estimates total Russian military casualties (killed and wounded) at 1.4–2.1 million, with 374,000–770,000 killed; its May 2026 estimate of total casualties was already 1.1–1.5 million.[1][2][3]

Contradicts. Zelensky, as reported by Babel and the Kyiv Independent, put Russian losses at about 1.6 million soldiers killed and wounded, of whom about 700,000 died; the 700,000 figure is the death toll, not total casualties.[4][5]

Contradicts. Zelensky also cited about 50,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed and about 400,000 wounded, so total casualties across both sides exceed 2 million by these estimates.[4][5]

Context. The Economist's 700,000 is at the upper end of its Russian death estimate, and Ukrainian sources report a monthly rise in Russian losses, so the trend is upward rather than a figure that was fixed at 700,000 on 2026-10-01.[6][7]
