The claim's 1% figure matches the 2026 Williams Institute estimate that 1.0% of Americans aged 13 and older identify as transgender, and the Hill and NBC News also describe about 1%.

What we found

Supports. The Williams Institute's 2026 primary report estimates that 1.0% of Americans aged 13 and older identify as transgender, about 2.8 million people.[3]

Supports. The Hill (2025) and NBC News (2025) both describe transgender people as roughly 1% of the U.S. population, citing the Williams Institute estimate.[4][5]

Context. The same Williams study puts the adult share at 0.8%, and FactCheck.org describes transgender people as a 'small percentage' of the population; a 2024 Household Pulse estimate is 0.95% of adults. These figures are consistent with 1% when rounded, but they depend on the measure used.[1][3][6]

Context. Earlier surveys gave a wider range: 0.5% to 1.6% of adults (PolitiFact, 2023) and 1.6% in a 2022 Pew survey. The 1% figure falls within that range.[2][7]
