What we found

Supports. The Williams Institute reports that DOJ removed gender identity questions from the National Crime Victimization Survey, making it impossible to identify transgender victims in the sample.[1]

Supports. The Council on Criminal Justice reports DOJ deleted a BJS statistical brief and dataset on NCVS violent victimization of LGBT people, which was later reposted.[2]

Context. The Appeal and Essential Data report removal of gender identity items from several DOJ crime and inmate surveys, and deletion of data on transgender inmates at the Bureau of Prisons.[3][4]

Context. The only trans-murder count in the sources (Washington Blade, citing A4TE) is a nonfederal count of killings, and no source says the federal government deleted it or any federal murder series.[5]

Context. The NCVS measures non-reported victimization and does not count homicides, so the removed NCVS data is a different series from a count of trans people murdered.[1]
