The claim calls the crimes OSI pursued "confabulated", but the DOJ's own records and the Holocaust Encyclopedia describe OSI's work as real investigations and prosecutions of people who participated in Nazi persecution. OSI investigated about 1,700 people and prosecuted over 300, so the central assertion that these were invented crimes is contradicted; the extraction faithfully reflects the post's wording.

A detail. The sources confirm the gist; the verdict faults a detail such as a date, number or wording.

What we found

Contradicts. The DOJ Criminal Division describes OSI's mandate as investigating people who participated in Nazi-era persecution of others based on race, religion, national origin, or political opinion, which is the opposite of fabricated charges.[3]

Contradicts. Wikipedia's OSI entry reports that OSI investigated about 1,700 suspects, prosecuted over 300, stripped at least 100 of citizenship, and deported 70, with evidence gathered from eyewitness and documentary records.[4]

Contradicts. The Holocaust Encyclopedia documents postwar trials of real Nazi perpetrators and their collaborators, including indictments by US prosecutors, which undercuts the claim that such prosecutions were confabulated.[5]

Context. Reporting on OSI cases describes real individuals accused of war crimes who were tried or left the US to avoid trial, and an AP investigation focuses on the Social Security benefits of expelled suspects, not on whether the crimes were invented.[1][2]
