What we found

Supports. Encyclopaedia Iranica reports that the Old Rus' chronicle's Svyatoslav destroyed Khazaria in 965 and took the city of Bela Vezha (Sarkel).[1]

Supports. Wikipedia and Britannica state that Sviatoslav I of Kiev conquered the Khazar capital Atil by 969 and crushed Khazar power in the 960s.[2][3]

Supports. Academic and encyclopedic compilations date the Khazar fortresses of Sarkel and Tamatarkha falling to the Rus' in 965, with Atil following around 968-969.[4][5]

Context. Sources date the destruction to 965-969, roughly three decades before the year 1000; 'shortly before' is a loose characterization of that timing, which no source disputes.[1][2][6]

Context. Some sources describe the Khazar state as weakened by Pechenegs, Arab trade shifts and Oghuz attacks before the Rus' campaigns, so Kievan Rus' was the decisive but not sole cause.[2][6]
