The claim that Israel had virtually no currency reserves at the time of the Eichmann trial (1961) is contradicted by the Bank of Israel's 1962 annual report, which records gross reserves of about $490 million and net reserves of $370 million at end-1962.

What was said

… Warsaw Pact is literally at war with Israel for decades, you know, and I, I believe that included DER elements on the ground, although that's never been acknowledged, but, um, it, it absolutely was a state of open warfare. But be as it may, you know, the, the Jewish state, by the time Eichmann was on trial, these billions in reparations were slated to end, and Israel had virtually nothing in terms of currency reserves. It had the infrastructural profile of a totally undeveloped country. It had no meaningful economy to speak of. What we found

Contradicts. The Bank of Israel's 1962 annual report states that foreign currency reserves, including gold, amounted to about $490 million at the end of 1962, with net reserves of $370 million, which is inconsistent with 'virtually nothing' in reserves.[3]

Contradicts. A World Bank appraisal describes Israel's foreign exchange reserves as over $500 million, equivalent to about eight to nine months of imports, and calls Israel an almost unique case among developing countries with strong inflationary pressures.[4]

Context. No source directly addresses Israel's infrastructure in 1961 as an 'undeveloped country'; the World Bank document instead describes rapid growth (10–11% average GNP growth 1950–1963) and a developing economy.[4]

Context. The sources cover 1961–1964 and are mostly unrated or secondary, so the reserve figures are for years immediately around the trial rather than the trial date itself; the Full Fact and PolitiFact pages are generic and do not address this claim.[1][2][3][4]
