No source reports a mortgage rate of 7.17% on or near 2026-09-15. Sources show a September average of 7.03% (Bank Rate Monitor) and a 30-year Freddie Mac rate of 7.28% on Oct. 1, so 7.17% falls inside the range but is not confirmed for the claim's date.

What we found

Context. Bank Rate Monitor reports the national average 30-year fixed purchase rate averaged 7.03% in September 2026, and Bankrate consumers averaged 6.32%.[3]

Context. Bloomberg reports the 30-year fixed rate rose to 7.28% on Oct. 1, 2026, the highest since November 2023, after crossing 7% in September for the first time in almost two years.[2]

Context. Freddie Mac's later weekly figures (7.32% the week before Oct. 29, then 7.24%) and the AP's note of a 7.4% peak earlier in October show rates moved well after the claim's date, so they do not directly grade a September 15 figure.[1][4]

Context. The 7.17% figure appears in NerdWallet's APR and LendingTree's page, but those are current-rate snapshots from other dates or unreliable pages, not a September 15 record.[5][6]
