What we found

Context. Reuters reports that the Islamic Republic's loyalist base is much reduced compared with the past, based on interviews with Basij members, officials, insiders and analysts, but it gives no headcount of radical adherents.[1]

Context. GAMAAN's 2024 survey reports that support for 'the principles of the Islamic revolution and the Supreme Leader' fell from 18% in 2022 to 11% in 2024, a share that roughly corresponds to 8-10 million people on a population of about 87.6 million.[3][4]

Context. The U.S. State Department report gives Iran's population as 87.6 million (midyear 2023), which provides the denominator for any percentage-based estimate.[3]

Context. PolitiFact found no solid estimate of the number of radical Muslims worldwide, which indicates that the measure the claim relies on has no established count behind it.[2]
