Sources confirm Ukraine banned roughly 11 to a dozen-plus pro-Russian parties (and the Communist Party) under martial law, but Freedom House says political competition continues and some banned-party members found ways to stay in office by forming new parties.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What was said

… well as personal, and that kind of answers your question about what else, other than public ignorance, is being used here, and to the point where every new article says something about Russia or, or China that I just finished arguing about the Us. Um, yeah, there's no freedom of speech there, they would say, as Ukraine shuts down all opposition, no matter what they are, you know, etc, and that's one of the ways that the regime can continue to function, mentally speaking, and there's not enough work done in that regard, but it is too close a correlation for it to be anything else. …

What we found

Contradicts. Freedom House says that apart from a Communist Party ban, Ukraine had no formal barriers to parties before 2022, and that more than a dozen parties were later banned as 'pro-Russian', while noting that 'Ukrainian politics have long featured dynamic competition.'[2]

Contradicts. A substack fact-check titled 'Fact or Fiction: Zelenskyy Banned All Opposition' says the bans affected 11 parties tied to Russia or in violation of the law, treating the 'all opposition' framing as a talking point that does not hold.[3]

Supports. Ukraine's 2022 bans targeted pro-Russian parties, including the largest opposition party, Opposition Platform–For Life, under a law barring parties that justify or deny Russian aggression.[2][4][5][6]

Context. PolitiFact's 2023 fact-check rated the claim that Ukraine banned 11 parties as accurate but needing context, since the parties were pro-Russian and the largest held 44 of 450 seats.[1]

Context. Opinion pieces describe 'all opposition parties' as removed, but these are advocacy commentary rather than factual reporting, and they are the main source of the 'all' framing.[7][8]
