Russia's 2026 rank is 8th by nominal GDP in the October 2026 IMF-based figures, not 7th, and Russia ranks even higher on PPP (about 4th), so no measure in the sources puts it seventh. The only sources saying seventh are an old 2012 Senate statement and a KPMG profile built on 2014–2018 projections.
This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

… Putin is probably, if not the most popular, one of the most popular politicians in the world, from the 1990s, where it had gone from an industrial power to a third world country, losing population, all at the hands of the U.S., to the seventh largest economy in the world. Contradicts. Multiple sources give Russia's 2026 nominal GDP rank as 8th, based on IMF World Economic Outlook data (about $2.86–2.9 trillion).[2][3][4][5]
Contradicts. Georank reports Russia ranked 8th by economy size for 2025, so the eighth-place ranking is not limited to 2026 projections.[6]
Contradicts. One ranking places Russia 9th by nominal GDP using IMF April 2026 projections, which is also not seventh.[7]
Supports. The 2012 Senate Finance Committee statement and a KPMG country profile both call Russia the seventh-largest economy, but these are dated (2012 and 2014–2018 projections) and do not reflect 2026 rankings.[1][8]
Context. Under PPP, sources place Russia around 4th (about $7.4–7.5 trillion), so the seventh-place figure does not hold under that measure either.[3][9]
