Sources support the claim that vitamin C regenerates or recharges astaxanthin after it scavenges reactive oxygen species. The support is mechanistic and partly hedged: a 2015 primary paper says vitamin C 'could' recharge astaxanthin, and a later transcript and a vendor FAQ state it more directly.

What was said

… In addition, acetyxanthin also helps upregulate repair processes, and it also neutralizes all kinds of reactive oxygen species all across your cells and your blood. And here's another little secret that a lot of people don't know: is that acetyxanthin is recharged by vitamin C. So an acetyxanthin molecule, in essence, sacrifices itself in order to neutralize a reactive oxygen species molecule, ROS, but then that acazanthin molecule can be reformed or re-energized with vitamin C, which is, of course, a water-soluble antioxidant. …

What we found

Supports. A 2015 primary study on Haematococcus pluvialis astaxanthin describes a synergistic effect with vitamin C that 'would recharge astaxanthin once it has scavenged ROS', though it is framed as a proposed mechanism.[2]

Supports. A 2026 Dr. Leaf transcript states that astaxanthin 'can get recharged by vitamin C', which gives an electron back after astaxanthin neutralizes a free radical.[3]

Supports. A 2025 supplement-vendor FAQ describes vitamin C helping to regenerate astaxanthin after it neutralizes a free radical. This is a commercial source with limited independence.[4]

Context. The PolitiFact fact-checks in the set concern vitamin C and colds or COVID-19 and do not address astaxanthin or its regeneration.[1][5]
