Woke is dead. Long live Woke! Woke 2.0 is here, but is it worse than original flavor? Maybe. There's a new lab leak out of Russia. A lab worker may have been exposed to the pneumonic plague. We'll tell you what that means. South and Central America have not elected a left-wing president since the defunding of USAID, but we're sure it's just a coincidence. We check in on the Brazil elections to see if that trend will hold. As of the October 5, 2026 posting, sources consistently report that no left-wing candidate had won a completed presidential election in Central or South America since the USAID cuts began in 2025, and the claim is graded on that date.
What we found
Supports. AP reports that conservatives have won seven major Latin American presidential elections in the past few years, most of them since Trump's January 2025 inauguration, with Peru's Fujimori the latest right-wing winner.[1]
Supports. Yahoo and Ground News coverage states that since the USAID overhaul began in early 2025, the political left had not won a single completed presidential election in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking Latin American countries that had gone to the polls.[2][3]
Supports. A listing of 2025–2026 elections (Ecuador, Bolivia, Honduras, Chile, Costa Rica, Peru, Colombia) shows right-leaning winners in each, consistent with the claim as of early October.[4][5]
Supports. The Washington Examiner notes that Bolsonaro led the first round of Brazil's election, with the runoff set for October 25, so the Brazilian result was still pending at the posting date.[6]
Context. Analysts dispute that USAID caused the trend: Yahoo and the Washington Examiner say the election results do not establish causation, and the Hudson Institute finds USAID was not a relevant factor in several of the eight elections.[2][6][7]
Context. A Hudson Institute report dated October 29, 2026 says Bolsonaro was defeated and that the left won Brazil's election, which means the streak ended after the claim was posted; under the as-of-posting rule this does not make the claim false.[7]
