The sources give competing arrest totals for the January 8, 2023 riots: contemporaneous reports cite roughly 1,000 to 1,500 arrests, while a Federal Police figure cited on Wikipedia (2,151 on January 9) and a Students For Liberty post say more than 2,000.

What we found

Contradicts. AP and Reuters report more than 1,000 and about 1,000 arrests respectively, and CNN quotes the Justice Minister at about 1,500 arrests in Brasília, all below the 2,000 threshold.[1][2][3]

Contradicts. Freedom House reports 'as many as 2,000' arrests, which is an upper-bound approximation rather than a confirmed count of more than 2,000.[4]

Supports. Wikipedia, citing Federal Police, reports 2,151 people arrested in flagrante on January 9, 2023, which would exceed 2,000, though the page is unrated and its section cites no sources.[5]

Supports. A Students For Liberty post states more than 2,000 people were detained, but it is advocacy commentary that cites Human Rights Watch only for later convictions, not for the arrest total.[6]

Context. Early reports such as CNBC's cited over 400 arrests as of Sunday evening, which reflects an earlier snapshot before the totals rose.[7]
