The war's role in higher gas prices is supported: AAA and Cleveland.com tie August 2026 pump prices to the Iran war and Strait of Hormuz volatility. But 'nearly five dollars a gallon' is not supported for 2026-08-10. The national average was about $4.06 to $4.10 that month, roughly $0.90 short of $5, so the price figure is overstated.
A detail. The sources confirm the gist; the verdict faults a detail such as a date, number or wording.
This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.
What we found
Contradicts. The BTS reported an August 2026 average regular gasoline price of $4.06 per gallon, and AAA's national average was $4.07 on Aug. 13 and $4.10 on Aug. 20, well below 'nearly five dollars'.[3][4][5]
Contradicts. EIA-based Reuters data put the August 2026 average gasoline price at $4.192 per gallon, still about $0.80 under five dollars, so no August source supports a near-$5 national average.[1]
Supports. AAA-sourced coverage states that in August 2026 the war between the U.S. and Iran, especially volatility in the Strait of Hormuz, was driving pump prices higher.[6][7]
Context. Prices rose later: AP reported $4.23 on Oct. 29, and NBC reported gas near $4.50 in late September, both after the 2026-08-10 date of the claim. Diesel records (up to $6.52) are a separate fuel and do not establish a gasoline price near $5 in August.[2][8]
Context. The claim's wording matches the post's own passage, so this is not an extraction addition. The discrepancy is in the magnitude of the price figure.
