… It's interesting, like, how the history behind authoritarian governments being very sensitive about demographic projections, in particular, there's this infamous story amongst statisticians about how Stalin had executed the statisticians who had done the census in maybe, Matt can look it up for me, I forget what year it was, but it was like in the '30s, maybe. Supports. Wikipedia reports the 1937 census counted 162,039,470 people against the 180,000,000 expected by Stalin, and that after the results were presented in March he ordered the arrest of census statisticians and chiefs of regional statistical centers, with executions following.[2]
Supports. IDEAS/RePEc abstract states that Ivan Kraval and Olimpy Kvitkin were arrested and shot because they calculated a lower population figure in the 1937 census than Stalin had announced.[3]
Supports. A 2026 Cambridge Historical Journal article says the census was suppressed and the officials who organized it were promptly arrested and executed, with the sensitivity of high-mortality evidence from the 1932–33 famine as a central reason.[4]
Supports. A Springer chapter says the findings were disappointing to a regime that equated population growth with its success, the findings were suppressed, and many responsible were arrested.[5]
Supports. Tolts (IUSSP) reports the 1937 results of 162 million would have exposed the falsehood of Stalin's claims, so they were denied and kept secret, and three successive heads of the Central Statistical Administration were executed during the Great Terror.[6]
Context. Amusing Planet notes the census data was judged too compromising to print, and that the regional chiefs and senior statisticians were arrested and executed, with their replacements arrested in turn.[7]
Context. The Reuters source concerns Memorial and Stalin's Great Terror generally and does not address the census or the statisticians directly.[1]
