The sources support that China acquired voter registration data, and the White House fact sheet says China obtained as many as 220 million records, but the 220 million figure is not independently confirmed and fact-checkers (FactCheck, BBC, PolitiFact) note that most state voter files are publicly available, so the 'illicit acquisition' framing is contested.

A detail. The sources confirm the gist; the verdict faults a detail such as a date, number or wording.

What we found

Contradicts. FactCheck.org says Trump distorted the facts: state voter files are mostly publicly available, and the 220 million figure was presented as secret when it largely was not.[1]

Contradicts. AP and BBC find no evidence that the acquisition changed any election outcome, and CBS reports the administration cannot confirm what percentage of the files was obtained by purchase, theft, or hacking versus public sources.[2][6][7]

Supports. The White House fact sheet, approved by ODNI, NSA, CIA and DHS, states China and its proxies 'bought, stole, or hacked as many as 220 million Americans' voter registration data.[5]

Supports. PolitiFact reports documents show China obtained voter registration records, with a document saying the 2013-21 data was publicly available for download and that China appeared to download it in 2022.[3]

Supports. BBC Verify says the released documents support claims that China took steps to acquire voter data, and RightWing reports the documents include a 204 million-record table.[6][8]

Context. Reuters reports Trump asserted China illicitly acquired 220 million files including names and addresses, while an unclassified 2021 intelligence assessment found no foreign alteration of votes.[4]
