The claim that Hobbs supported raising the sales tax to over 65% misreads the record. The only source on point describes a 2017 proposal, when Hobbs was a state senator, to raise a dedicated education sales tax by 66%, a relative increase in one tax rather than a sales tax rate of 65%.

… So don't let her ruin everything and destroy this beautiful state anymore. She's hurt our state. She's hurt this state very badly. She made Arizona one of the least affordable states in the entire country. She supported raising your sales tax to over 65% and doubling your gas tax. Think of it, your sales tax is through the roof. She voted and when you look at this, she vetoed all three times: no tax on tips, no tax on overtime, and no tax for your great, wonderful, beautiful seniors on Social Security. …

What we found

Contradicts. A 2017 report says Hobbs, as a state senator, backed raising a dedicated education sales tax by 66% (raising about $430 million). That is a percentage increase in one tax, not a sales tax rate of over 65%.[2]

Context. The same report says Hobbs joined a bipartisan 2018 effort to double the state gasoline tax, which is the gas-tax element of the post's broader claim and is not addressed by the sales-tax figure.[2]

Context. Other sources on Hobbs's tax record (campaign and fact-check pieces, a 2023 veto of a grocery sales tax ban) do not address a sales tax rate of 65% or any proposal to reach it.[1][3][4][5]
