Bolton pleaded guilty on June 26, 2026 to one count of retaining national defense information, and the plea resolved all 18 counts. No source says he pleaded guilty to taking guidance from foreign governments.

What was said

… Look at what Rex Tillerson was doing as Secretary of State during the first administration. There are lots of weasels. There are people who are beholden to financial interests in this country and who are taking guidance from foreign governments. I mean, that's basically what John Bolton has pleaded guilty to doing. You have people who have incredible resumes, who are respected and beloved, who've cashed in on that in service of another interest. I fear the president is getting bad advice with regard to Iran. …

What we found

Contradicts. The DOJ release says Bolton pled guilty to retention of national defense information under Count 12, and that the plea resolves all 18 counts. That is a classified-information offense, not taking guidance from foreign governments.[1][3][4]

Contradicts. Reporting describes the guilty plea as one count of mishandling or retaining classified information, with the material shared with family members for a memoir. None of these reports describes him taking direction from any foreign government.[1][4][5][6]

Context. A court filing says an Iranian government-linked cyber actor hacked Bolton's personal email in 2021 and obtained classified material he had stored there. This describes a hack of his account, not Bolton receiving guidance from a foreign government.[6][7]

Context. The indictment alleged he shared more than 1,000 pages of information with two unauthorized individuals and retained classified documents at home. This is the basis of the charges, and it does not mention foreign direction.[2]
