Multiple October 2026 reports say the Trump administration, through DHS and its general counsel James Percival, publicly slammed CBS's 60 Minutes profile of Moussa Diawara for leaving out an 'absurd bit of fraud' (his claim in an asylum application that he is gay).

What we found

Supports. The Trump administration slammed CBS's 60 Minutes segment for failing to mention a key reason for the deportation, which DHS said was an 'absurd bit of fraud' in Diawara's asylum application, namely his claim that he is gay.[4]

Supports. The Washington Examiner reports the Trump administration disputed 60 Minutes' characterization of the Texas-area deportation case, with the administration saying Diawara was deported for an asylum claim based on being gay despite having a wife and two children.[5]

Supports. Yahoo's reprint of the New York Post says a DHS spokesperson told the Post that CBS had been informed of the claimed fraud before the segment aired, and that the profile made no mention of it.[6]

Supports. Coverage cites DHS General Counsel James Percival calling Diawara the show's 'poster child' for wrongful deportations and ICE describing the segment as a 'sob story' that hides widespread fraud, consistent with the accusation of omission.[7][8]

Context. Earlier 2025 coverage of 60 Minutes pulling a CECOT prison story concerns a different segment and event, so it does not bear on this claim.[1][2][3]
