The 4,000% figure traces back to Kash Patel's question in the hearing, and sources that repeat it add no independent support. Independent disclosure-based estimates show Welch's net worth rising from about $8M (2022 midpoint) to about $13M (2025 midpoint), roughly 60%, with the 2024-to-2025 rise from about $9.1M to $12.8M, so a 4,000% increase is grossly off the record.

What was said

… "Do you believe that what I believe in is the rule of law? What I will always believe in is the rule of law, executing the rule of law, saying in advance that he was in the campaign. Are you done with your campaign ad, by the way? It's been rigged. I want to know how your wealth increased 4,000% since you became United States senator. That's a magic act all Americans should be able, Mr. Patel." Yeah, at the end, that was John Cornyn. I guess he was chairing the meeting for a moment in lieu of Chuck Grassley doing it, so Cornyn was upset with Cash Patel. Obviously, Cornyn's upset. …

What we found

Contradicts. Greederboard's breakdown of Welch's annual disclosures gives midpoints of about $8M for 2022 and $13M for 2025, a rise of roughly 60%, far short of 4,000%.[1]

Contradicts. VTDigger's review of Welch's disclosures reports net worth rising from nearly $9.1M in 2024 to more than $12.8M in 2025, driven by ordinary asset value changes.[2]

Supports. Patch and MEAWW repeat Patel's 4,000% figure, but they only restate the claim and are not independent corroboration.[3][4]

Context. Financial disclosures report wealth in value ranges, so net-worth estimates are imprecise. The sources give no pre-2022 baseline that would support a 4,000% rise.[5][6][7]
