As of the September 16, 2026 posting, multiple tier1 and tier2 sources (Reuters, BBC/CSIS, PolitiFact, Atlantic, NYT, CFR) report that U.S. stockpiles of key munitions such as Patriot, THAAD, PrSM/ATACMS and Tomahawk were heavily depleted during the Iran war, supporting the claim that the stockpile is running low.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What we found

Supports. Reuters reported on August 4, 2026 that the U.S. has used 'virtually all' of its PrSM and ATACMS long-range precision missiles and nearly half its Tomahawk supply, with officials worried about readiness.[1]

Supports. CSIS estimates cited by BBC and CNN show Patriot and THAAD interceptor inventories sharply reduced from pre-war levels, with more than 1,000 Tomahawks fired and replenishment taking years.[4][7]

Supports. The Atlantic and NYT report, citing current and former defense officials, that long-range munitions stocks are as low as 20 percent of Pentagon goals and that air-defense stocks have been worn down enough to delay deliveries to allies.[5][6]

Contradicts. Trump and Hegseth disputed the shortfall, and Trump said the U.S. has 'far more munitions than anyone in the world'; the White House says it has 'more than enough firepower.' These are denials rather than evidence the stockpile is not low.[4][6]

Context. CFR and Al Jazeera note the shortage is concentrated in hi-tech interceptors and stand-off weapons, while ordinary munitions remain plentiful and stockpiles have not reached critical levels; PolitiFact notes Biden-era Ukraine aid also depleted stocks.[2][3][8][9]
