No source says the US organized prison breaks for ISIS in Syria. The 2019 AP fact check found no evidence that Kurdish forces deliberately opened prison doors, and the 2026 CENTCOM-era reporting shows US forces moving 5,700 ISIS prisoners to Iraq explicitly to prevent breakouts.

What was said

… Is going to condemn me, and it got to the point where the condemnations about the U.S. Was defending ISIS, giving the Russian pilots the wrong coordinates; they bombed nothing, all to protect ISIS. You had prison breaks, uh, organized by the United States. I have several papers on, on that question. What we found

Contradicts. The US military worked with Syrian and Iraqi authorities to transfer more than 5,700 IS prisoners to Iraq specifically to prevent their escape, the opposite of organizing breaks.[3][4][5]

Contradicts. AP found no evidence that the Kurdish forces, US partners, deliberately opened prison doors to let ISIS militants out, and called the claim of deliberate release an exaggeration.[1]

Context. The 2026 escapes occurred after the SDF withdrew from al-Hol and prisons amid fighting with Syrian government forces, and the SDF blamed the collapse of peace talks and international indifference.[4][6]

Context. A 2022 VICE/Airwars investigation found that US and SDF mistakes, including unsafe facilities and ignored warnings, contributed to the Al-Sinaa breakout. This describes negligence and poor preparation, not US organization of the breakout.[7]

Context. The FactCheck.org 2019 piece addresses Trump's claims about ISIS detainees' origins and does not address whether the US organized any prison breaks.[2]
