The claim that Ukraine would have invaded Novorossiya and Donbass in 2022 had Russia waited a few days is a counterfactual that the sources contradict: the EUvsDisinfo debunk finds no evidence that Ukraine or NATO planned to attack the non-government-controlled areas, and ISW describes the Donbas attack claims as false pretexts.

What was said

… They have no, they have no chance of that ever happening. It would be a massive genocide if they were ever able to take over, which was the point of the 2022 invasion in the first place. Had the Russians waited a few more days, the Ukrainian army would have invaded Novorossiya and Donbass, um, and absorb that capital at the, you know, Black Rocks, be hence the Americans, be hence back into Ukraine and hence the Western, um, the Western orbit. …

What we found

Contradicts. EUvsDisinfo's response states there is no evidence that Ukraine or NATO had plans to attack the non-government-controlled areas of Donetsk and Luhansk, and that Russia recognised the separatist republics and invaded under pretext.[3]

Contradicts. ISW's February 2022 update reports that the DNR and LNR escalated accusations of Ukrainian plans to attack Donbas, and that DNR claims emphasized false threats used to set informational conditions for a Russian move.[4]

Context. Russian and separatist officials, including Peskov and the DPR People's Militia, publicly accused Ukraine of planning to retake or invade the Donbas region, a claim Ukraine denied.[1][5]

Context. Reuters reported Russian alarm over Donbass shelling, but also noted that Washington and allies saw the violence as a possible Russian pretext and that Moscow denied planning an invasion.[2]

Context. The claim's counterfactual timing ('if Russia had waited a few more days') is a speculative projection that none of the sources address directly.
