The 1,709 figure for 2018 to March 2024 appears in the Wilson Center and The Conversation, but those sources count murders, assassinations, attacks and threats against people in politics and government, including officials and party facilities, not only people running for office. The number is right, but the population it describes is broader than the claim says.

What we found

Contradicts. The 1,709 total is not limited to people running for office. It includes officials, government and party facilities, and threats, so the claim's 'people running for office were murdered or attacked' misstates its scope.[2][3][4]

Supports. The Wilson Center paper states that from 2018 to March 2024, 1,709 murders, assassinations, attacks and threats were registered in Mexico against people working in politics and government.[2][4]

Supports. The Conversation reports 1,709 targeted attacks, murders, assassinations and threats between 2018 and March 2024 against people working in politics or government, or against government and party facilities.[3]

Context. Candidate-specific figures are much smaller: Data Cívica counted 105 candidates, aspiring candidates and former candidates murdered from 2018 to 2023, and the Wilson Center reports at least 48 murders of political candidates in the 2024 process up to March 8.[2][5]

Context. The 1,709 figure rests mainly on the Wilson Center report, which carries lower credibility (0.40), and a University of Cincinnati blog gives a similar total but dates it to mid-2024 rather than March 2024.[1][2]
