As of the claim date (2026-08-14), the Pentagon's April 2026 memo had made the flu shot voluntary for all active and reserve members, and the requirement had been reinstated only in targeted form: for boot camp recruits and some exception categories granted in June.

What we found

Contradicts. The April 2026 Pentagon memo made the annual influenza vaccine voluntary for all Active and Reserve Component personnel, and Hegseth said he would not force service members to take it.[1][3][4]

Contradicts. Reporting on the reinstatement describes it as targeted, not universal: trainees and certain categories such as health care, child care and deploying personnel, rather than all active duty personnel.[2][5]

Supports. By late June 2026 the Pentagon said boot camps for all military services were again requiring flu vaccination for all recruits, and exceptions were granted to the Army, Navy, Air Force, NSA and Defense Health Agency.[2]

Context. A Department of the Air Force memo dated October 20, 2026 requiring flu shots for six population categories postdates the claim date and does not show a blanket requirement for all active duty personnel.[6]
