The claim that COVID-19 was made (engineered) in a Wuhan lab is contradicted by authoritative fact-checking and scientific sources, which found no evidence the virus was created there, though a lab-escape hypothesis remains debated and is not the same as 'made in a lab'.

What was said

… that they knew, Anthony Fauci knew, that women who were pregnant had a higher rate of miscarriage from taking the shot, and told them over and over and over again, go ahead and take the shot. Drawing a lot of parallels here to COVID, like you said. And so, in that instance, right, the, uh, I want to say, the allegation or the, you know, uh, maybe unconfirmed truth is that it was made in a lab in Wuhan, right? But now absolutely true, absolutely true but now we're saying no, artificial intelligence is going to be the one making it in a lab. And so what if you sell artificial intelligence, I just want you to mutate this, uh, this virus that can battle this bacteria, and AI is like, no, I think I'm …

What we found

Contradicts. PolitiFact rated the claim that COVID-19 was constructed at the Wuhan institute False, stating there is no evidence the coronavirus was created there and that genomic evidence would show alteration if it had been.[1]

Contradicts. CIDRAP quotes virologists saying there is 'exactly zero evidence or data' of a connection to a lab, and that the virus clearly originated in nature.[5]

Contradicts. A WHO-appointed team concluded the lab-leak theory was 'extremely unlikely' after visiting the Wuhan lab, and the BBC reports most argue any lab virus would have been unaltered, not engineered.[6]

Context. Factcheck.org (2025) reports the origin is unknown, that some US intelligence agencies assess a lab origin as 'most likely' only with low or moderate confidence, and that the evidence points to a natural origin.[2]

Context. Reuters and AP treat a lab escape from the Wuhan institute as a plausible hypothesis that warrants investigation, and China rejects it, so the accidental-leak question remains contested.[3][4]
