The claim that Iran killed 42,000 protesters is a figure Trump cited without a source, and it exceeds every estimate in the sources. AP says a toll that high has not been verified, HRANA confirmed about 7,000 deaths, and the highest estimate cited (Iran International, via Wikipedia) is about 36,500, so the magnitude is not supported.

… They are a theocratic death cult who, who, who feel emboldened when they get attacked by the Great Satan. They feel like they're standing up to the Great Satan. So what if their economies has crashed? So what if they had to shoot to death 42,000 ah protesters in the streets? That just, that's just the way they operate. Their people don't matter, their cut, their, their bridges and ah roads don't matter, and ah certainly their soldiers don't matter. Their military doesn't matter. …

What we found

Contradicts. AP's fact check says a death toll of the claimed size has not been verified, and HRANA confirmed deaths of just over 7,000 in the January protests, with thousands more possibly killed but unverified.[1]

Contradicts. Reuters reports HRANA had verified 4,519 unrest-linked deaths, with 9,049 more under review, and an Iranian official put the confirmed toll above 5,000; none of these verified counts reaches 42,000.[2]

Contradicts. The UK Commons Library lists estimates from about 3,117 (state-funded Martyrs Foundation) to 6,800 (HRANA) and says the number killed cannot be independently verified, which places the claimed 42,000 far above the verified range.[3]

Context. Trump's 42,000 figure was stated without details or a source, and Zeteo reports the 30,000–40,000 numbers emerged quickly and were repeated without independent verification.[4][5]

Context. Wikipedia cites estimates ranging from 5,000 to over 36,500 killed, confirming that mass killings occurred but that the 42,000 figure is above the top of the cited range.[6]
