Sources consistently report that generative AI draws more electricity than conventional searches (about 10 times per query, per the IEA) and uses water for cooling, so the claim's direction holds as of 2026-09-12. No source directly benchmarks generative AI against 'algorithmic AI' on water, and the water magnitude is disputed (Altman calls water concerns 'totally fake'), so confidence is moderate.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What we found

Supports. Science News reports that querying ChatGPT uses about 10 times as much energy as a standard online search, citing the International Energy Agency.[4]

Supports. The Daily Star repeats the IEA figure that a generative AI request consumes 2.9 watt-hours, about ten times a Google search.[5]

Supports. An empirical study cited by an Eastern-European journal finds high-volume generative queries use 2.1–2.3 Wh of electricity and more than 0.8 liters of water, versus under 0.12 Wh for factual queries.[6]

Supports. MIT explains that generative AI training, deployment and fine-tuning draw large amounts of electricity and that a great deal of water is needed to cool the hardware.[2]

Contradicts. OpenAI's Sam Altman disputes water-use estimates for ChatGPT as no longer accurate, but this is a company statement and PolitiFact notes the low figure he cites is unconfirmed, so it does not reverse the comparison.[1][7]

Context. The GAO notes that estimates of generative AI water consumption are limited and that the portion of data center electricity tied to generative AI is unclear, so precise magnitudes are not settled.[3]
