As of 2026-08-28, the national generic-ballot polls available show Democrats ahead, including Emerson (D+8, Aug 20), UMass/YouGov (D+8, Aug 26), Quantus (D+6.9, Aug 28), and McLaughlin, YouGov and ActiVote (D+3 to D+6), with a polling average of D+8.7 later in October.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What was said

… These races are going to be very close, and if turnout is depressed another point among Mega diehards, that could make the difference in some places. Absolutely, there is already an enthusiasm gap that is quite extensive. When you look at the generic polling, Democrats are ahead across the board, but even more troubling for Republicans is the enthusiasm gap. Who is going to show up? And as you know, Greg, this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. …

What we found

Supports. Emerson College's national poll (Aug 16-17, published Aug 20) found Democrats leading the generic congressional ballot 51% to 43%.[1][2]

Supports. The pollsmax polling table lists every national poll dated on or before Aug 28, 2026 (UMass/YouGov, Quantus, McLaughlin, YouGov, ActiVote, Strength In Numbers) with Democrats ahead, by 3 to 8 points.[3]

Supports. ActiVote's Aug 9 poll found Democrats leading 52.5% to 47.5%, and the pollsmax average on Oct 23 showed Democrats up 8.7 points.[3][4]

Contradicts. The HarrisX poll (Aug 30) showed Republicans +2, and Concord's Nebraska poll showed Republicans +2 on the generic ballot. Both are either after the claim date or state-level rather than national, so they do not defeat a national 'across the board' reading as of Aug 28.[3][5]

Context. Ipsos's Aug 31 poll (D+5) and the pollsmax average both show Democrats ahead in the weeks around the claim date.[3][6]
