The bill text quoted in the sources (Sanders' Medicare for All, Sec. 107) makes it unlawful for private insurers to sell coverage that duplicates Medicare for All benefits, and PolitiFact says some versions ban private insurance matching Medicare's coverage.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What we found

Contradicts. El-Sayed's campaign says his plan does not ban additional private insurance, and Yahoo and Bridge report that typical Medicare for All proposals ban duplicative coverage while his version would not.[1][3][4][5]

Supports. The Sanders bill text quoted by Conte makes it unlawful for private insurers to sell coverage duplicating Medicare for All benefits, which the op-ed says would ban virtually all private plans.[6]

Supports. The House Budget Committee release says Medicare for All would ban private insurance, including employer-sponsored coverage, if the insurance duplicates Medicare for All benefits.[2]

Supports. PolitiFact states that some versions of Medicare for All call for banning private health insurance that matches Medicare's coverage.[1]

Context. Vox's 2019 analysis says the Sanders bill 'actually doesn't' abolish private insurance and that quite a bit of insurance would remain private, which disputes the broader framing of a total ban.[7]
