Sources show Texas did not receive the federal citizenship data it requested in 2024, and Texas sued the Biden administration over it, which supports the core of the claim.

What was said

… They've rapidly provided us the citizenship data that we needed, right, to make sure that illegal immigrants are not on our voter rolls. The Biden administration, for years, was blocking that. Why? Because, of course, the Democrats want illegal aliens voting. Of course, the Democrats do not believe in election integrity. …

What we found

Contradicts. Houston Public Media reports that USCIS pointed Texas Secretary of State Nelson to a program it maintains, and AP reports that the federal government has offered states access to the SAVE data system since 2012. This undercuts the claim that access was blocked outright.[1][4][5]

Supports. Texas Attorney General Paxton's October 2024 letter said the Biden-Harris administration failed to provide states access to federal databases needed to verify voter-roll citizenship.[2]

Supports. Texas Republican lawmakers said the federal government failed to meet Texas's deadline for USCIS citizenship verification data, and Texas sued the Department of Homeland Security in October 2024 for not providing it.[3][4][5]

Context. The Biden administration opposed Republican efforts and argued that existing laws against noncitizen voting were working, so the dispute was over the scope of federal data sharing rather than a documented outright ban.[1]

Context. The 'blocked' characterization comes largely from the claimants and their allies. The sources do not contain an independent finding that the administration deliberately blocked Texas access.[2][5]
