Sources show Texas's SB 10 requires the Ten Commandments in public elementary and secondary classrooms, Texas schools serve about 5.5 million students, and the en banc Fifth Circuit upheld the law in April 2026, so roughly 5 million children being exposed to the posters this school year is consistent with the record.

What we found

Supports. Texas educates about 5.5 million students, and the law requires the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms, so the claim's 5 million figure is consistent within rounding.[1][4][5]

Supports. The Texas Attorney General's advisory states that beginning in the 2025-2026 school year every public elementary and secondary classroom must display the Ten Commandments, except in the eleven districts protected by a federal injunction.[3]

Supports. The Fifth Circuit ruled in April 2026 that Texas can enforce the law, and later coverage says the state can enforce it, which supports that the requirement was in force around September 2026.[2][6][7]

Context. Because the law only requires districts to hang posters that are donated, not every classroom is guaranteed to display one, which slightly qualifies the claim that all 5 million children will be greeted by them.[4]
