The claim that the Republican administration enacted the largest tax cut in U.S.

What was said

We have an extraordinary record of delivering for the American people fulfilling our promises. You know we effectively made a contract with America in 2024 and we have done everything that we said we were going to do. Secured the border tight. We gave the largest tax cut in U.S. history. We made the largest spending cut in U.S. history as well, $1.6 trillion to try to get the government to work more efficiently and effectively. We cut massive Biden era regulations. We got the economy going again. …

What we found

Contradicts. PolitiFact rated Zach Nunn's similar claim Mostly False, finding the One Big Beautiful Bill tied for sixth-largest by new cuts and third-largest when combined with extended 2017 cuts, using GDP as the best measure.[1]

Contradicts. AP Fact Check found the December tax overhaul ranks behind Reagan's early-1980s cut, post-WWII tax cuts, and at least several others; CRFB ranked Trump's package eighth-biggest since 1918 as a share of the economy.[2]

Contradicts. FactCheck.org reported that the 'largest tax cut in history' designation would go either to Reagan's 1981 cut or Obama's 2012 extension, depending on the measure, not to the Trump-era legislation.[3]

Contradicts. BBC fact-checked the claim that the Trump-backed tax reform was the biggest in US history and found it is not, measured as either a percentage of GDP or in absolute terms, though it was the biggest corporate tax cut.[7]

Contradicts. ABC News fact-check team found the 2025 tax law does not rank first under every common measure and that its place in history depends on measurement.[8]

Supports. Administration-affiliated sources (White House archive, Ways and Means Chairman Smith, Speaker Johnson's office) assert the law is the largest tax cut in history, but these are partisan claims that fact-checkers have rejected rather than independent corroboration.[4][5][6]

Context. Investopedia describes the 1981 Economic Recovery Tax Act as the largest tax cut in U.S. history, which supports the view that other cuts rank higher than the Trump-era law.[9]
