As of 2026-10-28, New York did not require registered voters to show photo ID at the polls, and the NY Attorney General, State Board of Elections and NYC Board of Elections all say so.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What we found

Supports. The NY Attorney General states voters are never required to present photo identification to cast an in-person ballot in New York.[3]

Supports. The NY State Board of Elections verifies voter identity before Election Day through DMV or social security numbers, and asks for ID only if identity cannot be verified and the voter is voting for the first time.[4]

Supports. The NYC Board of Elections says registered voters do not need to show ID to vote, unless they did not provide identification with their registration.[6]

Context. PolitiFact notes New York does not require all voters to show ID at the polls, but first-time voters who gave no ID at registration must show it when voting.[1][7]

Context. Bill A1927 would require a photo ID to vote, but as of the sources it was only referred to committee and had not become law.[5]

Context. The AP fact check of 2026-10-29 repeats the same rule: voters are asked for ID at the polls only if identity cannot be verified before Election Day.[2]
