As of 2026-09-04, CBS and CNN were in a pending corporate combination: Paramount's $81 billion takeover of Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns CNN, was awaiting completion, and sources said CNN would come under the same roof as CBS, though whether it would stay a separate brand was unconfirmed.

What we found

Supports. An April 2026 AP report says the Paramount–Warner Bros. Discovery deal would bring CNN and CBS News under the same roof, though whether CNN would stay a separate brand was not yet confirmed.[3]

Supports. A July 2026 Reuters report says the proposed Paramount–Warner merger was still pending UK review and would place CNN and CBS News archives under common ownership.[1]

Supports. A September 21, 2026 CNN report says the state attorneys general settled the lawsuit, clearing the way for the merger to close and combining CBS and CNN under one owner.[4]

Contradicts. Skydance's stated plan keeps CBS News and CNN as separate newsrooms under a settlement-required editorial independence board, which cuts against the idea of a merger of the two networks themselves.[5][6][7]

Context. The October 2026 AP report says the deal closed and CNN and CBS now share one owner, but Skydance said the two news operations would remain separate, with Mark Thompson at CNN and Bari Weiss at CBS.[2][6][8]

Context. A late-October Mediaite item citing Oliver Darcy says Skydance appears to intend to merge CNN and CBS News, with CNN possibly coming out on top.[9]
