Mary Peltola@MaryPeltolaOct 10, 2026Grocery prices in Alaska have gone from bad to apocalyptic. Living at the end of the supply chain has always meant paying more. But Alaska families have never struggled this hard just to put food on the table. We need a fighter in DC working day and night to bring costs down.
The sources show Alaska grocery costs are high relative to the national average (about 26.6% above it) and that Anchorage CPI rose 3.3% year over year in August 2026, but none states that current grocery prices are historically unprecedented for families.
This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.
What we found
Contradicts. Coverage of Alaska prices in the record reports moderate current inflation (Anchorage CPI up 3.3% year over year in August 2026; national food CPI up 2.7%) with no source describing these levels as a historical record or unprecedented.[2][3][6]
Context. Alaska's grocery cost level is reported as high, roughly 26.6% above the national average, but these figures are from unrated aggregator and social-media coverage and say nothing about how current levels compare with past decades.[7][8][9][10]
Context. The Alaska Economic Trends report describes Alaska inflation slowing in 2025, which cuts against a narrative of record-breaking price increases.[4]
Context. The claim's 'historically unprecedented' framing is a stronger assertion than the passage's 'never struggled this hard'; the extraction converts a rhetorical comparison into a quantified historical first, and the claim also widens scope from general household struggle to grocery prices specifically.[5]
Context. The PolitiFact item concerns President Trump's claim that prices are 'coming down' and does not address Alaska grocery prices or any historical comparison for Alaska families.[1]
