The sources show the Polar LNG project, which involves Novatek, was discussed in US-Kremlin talks and that a sanctions waiver benefited Novatek, but none states that the Trump administration backed the sale. The claim departs from the passage's loose wording, and Polar LNG denies the financing allegations while the Treasury Department declined comment.

What was said

… It's a tactic straight out of the Reconstruction South, when gangs of white supremacists, often organized as the Ku Klux Klan, visited Republican voters before elections to make it clear their survival depended on staying away from the polls. Even so, the Alaska suit was a new level of election interference and may reflect the recently exposed story that the administration is backing the sale of a liquefied natural gas project in Alaska to a sanctioned Russian company. What we found

Contradicts. Polar LNG denies that a Russian company secretly financed the project, and the Treasury Department did not comment on the project's sanctions status.[1][3]

Supports. The NYT-based reporting says the project was discussed in White House-Kremlin negotiations, and former CEO Joel Riddle said he notified Trump administration officials about the Russian financing and urged an investigation.[2][4][5]

Context. A October 16 waiver of Russia sanctions requirements reportedly benefited Novatek, which is involved in the Alaska gas venture, and the waiver reportedly preserved the venture's path forward.[6]

Context. Trump strongly supports the separate Alaska LNG project, but the sources do not tie that support to Polar LNG or to any sale of the Polar project to a sanctioned Russian company.[3][7]

Context. Polar LNG's plan to buy equipment from Novatek's Arctic LNG 2 requires OFAC authorization, and no source reports that such authorization was granted or that the administration endorsed it.[1][3]
