Multiple authoritative sources (AP, FactCheck.org, The American Presidency Project, the House Clerk's records, and the National Archives) confirm that George W. Bush lost the 2000 popular vote to Al Gore (about 50.46 million to 50.99 million) while winning the Electoral College 271 to 266.

… The problem with that is there's tens of millions of people that are underrepresented in California because of that. Likewise with the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court is minority rule. What we found

Supports. AP explainer states Bush lost the popular vote to Al Gore by more than 500,000 votes but won 271 electoral votes to Gore's 266.[1]

Supports. FactCheck.org states Al Gore received about 540,000 more votes than Bush, and Bush won the electoral vote 271 to 266.[2]

Supports. The American Presidency Project's 2000 results show Bush with 50,455,156 popular votes versus Gore's 50,992,335, with Bush at 271 electoral votes.[4]

Supports. Snopes reports Bush narrowly lost the popular vote to Gore in 2000 before winning the presidency via Florida and the Electoral College.[3]

Context. Some lower-credibility sources report slightly different vote totals (e.g., 50,456,002 or 50,456,062 for Bush), and one unrated source wrongly reverses the popular vote winner, but these conflicts do not change the direction of the result.[5][6][7]
