What we found

Supports. EFE reported on 2024-06-06 that Spain announced it would join the ICJ case brought by South Africa, with Foreign Minister Albares citing support for peace and international law.[2]

Supports. An AP report carried by PBS says Spain became the first European country to petition the ICJ for permission to join South Africa's case accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.[1]

Supports. The ICJ press release lists a Spain declaration of intervention under Article 63 in the South Africa v. Israel proceedings, and the UN ICJ page notes Spain filed for intervention in the case.[3][4]

Context. The public ICJ hearings on South Africa's provisional-measures request were held in May 2024, and Spain's intervention came later, so the 'during the hearing' timing is not directly confirmed by these sources.[2][4]
