The claim that the US went 45 years without building an auto factory is contradicted by fact-checkers. AP and FactCheck.org both found that more than two dozen major vehicle assembly plants opened in the US over the past four decades, so the claim is false.

What was said

… We have 21.2 trillion. So we have 21 trillion, 200 million dollars invested, building plants, factories, building everything all over our country. We have more auto factories being built today than at any time in the history of our country. Do you know we went 45 years without building one auto factory? They were all being taken. Now they're all coming back. You know why? My fifth favorite word. Remember when I said it was my favorite word and the press killed me? I said, Tariff. What we found

Contradicts. AP's fact check states it is not true that a vehicle factory has not been built in the US in 44 years, and says more than two dozen major new vehicle assembly plants opened in the US during the past four decades.[1]

Contradicts. FactCheck.org rated Trump's similar claim that there had not been a new auto plant built in decades as false, noting that Volvo and Mercedes-Benz announced new plants and that auto plants have indeed been built in the past 40 years.[2]

Contradicts. PolitiFact found the claim that no car plant had been built in decades exaggerated, counting new assembly plants and many expansion projects over the preceding decade.[3]

Context. Sources also note that the US has had significant automotive manufacturing investment under Trump's second term, but this does not support the claim of a 45-year gap with no new auto factory built.[1]
