Multiple tier-1 outlets (AP, Reuters, NBC, WSJ) report that Gov. Mikie Sherrill said about 6,600 noncitizens were registered to vote in New Jersey from June 2023 to June 2024, because of a motor vehicle system software error.

This claim is about the present, so it is judged as of the day it was checked.

What was said

… Are we giving the states money to do basic voter roll hygiene and make sure that they aren't stealing their own elections? Is that what we're doing? Which is the listing of people that are in the country but are not citizens. And as we saw in New Jersey, who claimed they had no problem with non-citizens voting, they had 6,600 people that they admitted were registered to vote who are not citizens. Yeah, no, it's true, and that's why, after that came out, and we heard from the governor of New Jersey to say, yes, 6,600 people were registered to vote, and they are not legal citizens, and hundreds of those people actually did vote, I would have thought …

What we found

Supports. AP and Reuters both report that Gov. Sherrill said a software error led to about 6,600 noncitizens being registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024.[1][2]

Supports. NBC News and WSJ independently report the same 6,600 figure, attributed to the governor and state officials, with noncitizens who answered 'no' on citizenship questions at driver's license and ID applications.[5][6]

Context. The state describes the registrations as the result of a software error that registered people 'through no fault of their own,' so the state did register them, but not deliberately; the claim's wording does not mention this.[5][7]

Context. FactCheck.org and PolitiFact dispute Trump's claim of thousands of noncitizens voting, not the 6,600 registration figure; they note the state's count of about 400 who voted and that no federal or state data backs the larger claim.[3][4]

Context. A later NJ.com report describes a teen's registration that the state disputes, and a state removal of over 5,000 names in August; neither contradicts the 6,600 figure the state announced.[8][9]
