Today, 4 Republicans and 3 Democrats on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee issued a statement telling the President that importing Russian diesel violates the law- a law even 83-year-old Jim Risch voted for in 2022. But as chair and supposed leader of this important committee, why is Risch absent from this statement? Is he losing control of his own committee? Or is he just waiting to see what benefits himself the most?
The sources do not contain a roll-call or other official record of Jim Risch voting for the 2022 Russian energy import ban. The only direct support is an unrated opinion piece [4], and the social media posts [5][6] repeat the claim without independent backing.
What we found
Supports. An unrated Idaho State Journal opinion piece states Risch voted in 2022 for legislation explicitly banning Russian energy imports.[3]
Context. Risch's March 2022 post on X praised the administration's move to ban Russian oil imports as a step in the right direction, indicating public support for the ban but not documenting a vote.[4]
Context. The social media posts repeat the claim about the 2022 vote without citing any independent record, so they provide no corroboration.[5][6]
Context. The congress.gov and Senate press releases describe other Risch-led Russia measures, such as the S.5025 sanctions bill and the uranium import ban, but none addresses a 2022 vote on the energy import ban.[1][2]
