The only source giving the figure of $908.5 billion is a Khaama article (published 2026-10-17) citing Forbes' real-time ranking as of Oct 16, not Fortune. Fortune's own figures in the sources (about $1.04 trillion on Oct 6) and a Fortune article from Oct 21 do not give a net worth for Oct 20, so the Fortune attribution cannot be checked.

Our two reads of who says this, and how, disagree, so it counts as the post's own claim.

… The latest US Census data estimated about 73 million people in the US under age 18. Using that figure and the company's share price on the day of Musk's announcement, the giveaway would total merely 11 billion dollars. What we found

Supports. Khaama (Oct 17, 2026) reports Musk's net worth at $908.5 billion per Forbes' Real-Time Billionaires ranking, last updated Oct 16, which is close to the claimed date of Oct 20.[1]

Context. Fortune reported Musk's net worth at about $1.04 trillion after an Oct 6 SpaceX rally, but no source gives a Fortune net worth figure for Oct 20.[4]

Context. Other trackers gave different figures in the same period: Bloomberg showed $987B on Oct 8, and Forbes showed $869B on Nov 1 after a October decline. These show the figure moved a lot within weeks, so a single-day number is hard to pin down.[2][3]

Context. The claim attributes the figure to Fortune, but the only source showing $908.5 billion attributes it to Forbes, and no source confirms that Fortune published that number.[1][5]
