Multiple sources directly report that Wilhelm Höttl's sworn affidavit to the Nuremberg prosecutors (1945) was the source of the approximately six million Jewish death figure, which he attributed to Adolf Eichmann.

What we found

Supports. Haaretz reports that Höttl was apparently the first to mention the figure, in a November 1945 Nuremberg affidavit and again in his 1961 testimony at Eichmann's trial, describing Eichmann's August 1944 estimate of 6,000,000 Jewish dead.[1]

Supports. A December 1945 Asbury Park Press report of the USHMM archive quotes Höttl's affidavit giving about 4 million killed in extermination camps and 2 million by other means, and attributes the estimate to Eichmann.[2]

Supports. Holocaust.today and the Palestine Studies article both state that Höttl's Nuremberg affidavit (PS-2738) gave the 6 million figure and that his testimony is the key source for it.[3][4]

Supports. Nukebook describes Höttl, together with Dieter Wisliceny, as instrumental in establishing the six million figure at Nuremberg through his affidavit, which he said came from Eichmann.[5]

Context. Some sources dispute the reliability of Höttl's account, noting that Eichmann denied knowing the total in his 1961 trial and that no Eichmann report has been found, but none say Höttl was not the source of the figure.[5][6]
