Context. Speidel was appointed on 22 November 1955 as Chef der Abteilung IV 'Gesamtstreitkräfte' in the Bundesverteidigungsministerium, and later became Oberbefehlshaber of Allied Land Forces Central Europe from 1957 to 1963.[1][2][3][4]
Context. Der Spiegel describes Speidel as Inspekteur der Bundeswehr and head of the 'Streitkräfte' department, which it says functions roughly like a Wehrmacht general staff; this is a comparison, not a formal title of Chief of the Bundeswehr General Staff.[5]
Context. No source states that Speidel held the formal post of chief of the Bundeswehr General Staff, so the claim's literal title is not addressed by the sources.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
