The Health Ranger ReportAug 14, 2026
In August 2026, California researchers from Stanford and the Arc Institute used AI to design 16 viable bacteriophages. However, the study generated complete genomes for bacterial viruses to combat resistant bacteria, not genomic sequences for pathogenic protein structures.
Our two reads of who says this, and how, disagree, so it counts as the post's own claim.

… And I think that that is essentially the biggest, the biggest sort of, like, like, what were you thinking? Just give all this away to other people. And I think that biosecurity is going to be a big thing in the future. On those lines, Zach, uh, this last week saw an announcement from a team i forgot where exactly, but I think it was out of California. They claimed to have used AI to create a genomic sequence for the construction of a so-called virus, uh, pathogenic protein structures or whatever, and they said they were harmless, and they said they came up with 16 through AI. And, of course, my reaction is, yeah, this is just where it starts, you know, and then next and you're working for the Department of War um but that's my take. What's your take on it? I mean, of course AI can, you know, create genomic sequences. …

Contradicts. The study engineered complete bacteriophage genomes targeting E. coli bacteria to overcome antibiotic resistance, rather than genomic sequences for pathogenic protein structures.[1][2]
Supports. Researchers at Stanford University and the Arc Institute in California used an AI genome language model to engineer 16 viable bacteriophages based on the Phi X-174 genome template.[1][2]
